What is stress? We all know what it is. Don’t we?

 

We all know how it feels to be ‘stressed’ as well. But when somebody raises the question, we all run out of words. And same is the case with the reasons why we feel stressed. It might be hard to pinpoint to something.

According to studies, 46% of this stress is because of workload, 28% because of people and related issues, 20% because of juggling work/personal lives and 6% because of lack of job security. Summing up, we can say work life and workplace qualifies as the major contributor of stress.

Workplace stress can be because of many reasons.

Nature of the job

If the kind of job you do involves a lot of risk it’s obvious it comes with a lot of stress.

For instance, the jobs which put you, your life in danger, the jobs where you can’t dare go past the deadline, that gives you a heavy workload etc. those  involve a lot of worrying, and gives individuals immense pressure to deal with.

Again, it depends on the people too. There can be individuals who can take it lightly or work more effectively under stress, but that will be a minority. It will only cause more harm to the individuals, their physical and mental health and of course their productivity, than any good.

One’s position

Your role in the organization, the responsibilities you’re entrusted with, expectations the company has from you, the workload, all of these are things we worry about on a daily basis.

And then there’s promotion in job, conflicts in role or responsibility, lack of job security etc. It is more or less, the responsibility of the employers to make you feel secured about your position in the organization, and to make sure there arise no conflicts in responsibilities though.

In other words, the organization can lessen the stress their employees are facing due to their role in the organization, to a great extent.

Climate in the workplace

If the workplace isn’t friendly enough, has strict rules to abide and has its own norms or behaviour patterns that needs to be followed, they can act as added pressure on individuals or employees.

Same is the case when communication flow is so formal and happens only in one direction leaving no space for lower rank employees to participate or give feedbacks. This can negatively affect the productivity of individuals. (Read on becoming a better team player here)

For a relaxed and stress-free environment where everybody gives their best, employees should be given enough freedom and a pleasant space to work in.

Interpersonal relationships

If you have a bad relationship with your boss, your colleagues or say, anyone in your workplace, it will definitely have an effect on you and your work.

It can make you so self-conscious, about your words, work etc. And that will make you remain stressed all day, everyday. Office politics have a similar effect too. If people are torn between different groups or a few have an advantage over others, that can leave the others stressed. So it is more than necessary to share good working relationships.
